Good equipment supports a calm walk. It does not teach one by itself.

Choose comfort first

Pick a collar or harness that sits comfortably and lets your dog move naturally. A harness can reduce pressure on the neck; check that it clears the shoulders and cannot be slipped.

Reward the moment

Start somewhere quiet. Reward your dog when they are close and the lead is loose. Build up gradually as they learn the rhythm of walking with you.

Pause, then continue

If the lead tightens, stand still. Move on when it relaxes. Avoid jerking the lead or using discomfort to stop pulling.

Protect without pressure

Keep your dog close near traffic, livestock and other dogs. For flat faced dogs, a well fitted harness avoids neck pressure; ask your vet if breathing or exercise is a concern.
